Module 1: Understanding the Senior School Landscape
As a parent, your active participation is crucial in guiding your child through this significant transition from Junior to Senior School. This guide will demystify the process, ensuring you are well-equipped to help your Grade 9 learner make informed decisions for their future. The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) aims to empower learners to pursue education paths aligned with their strengths and aspirations, ultimately preparing them for the dynamic demands of the modern world. This transition marks the first cohort of students moving from Junior Secondary to Senior School under CBC.
Guidance – Parents play a vital role in helping students navigate this important transition.
CBC Framework – The curriculum focuses on developing competencies aligned with student strengths.
First Cohort – This marks the pioneering group transitioning from Junior Secondary to Senior School.
What is Senior School (Grades 10-12)?
Senior School encompasses Grades 10 to 12. In Senior School, learners will take a total of seven subjects.
These subjects are divided into:
Four (4) Core Subjects
These are mandatory for all students, regardless of their chosen pathway. They typically include: English, Kiswahili/KSL, Community Service Learning, Mathematics, Physical Education (Note: While some sources
list Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Community Service Learning as the four core subjects, Physical Education is also mentioned as one of the four in one source. It is advisable to confirm the most current official list for the core subjects your child will take.)
Three (3) Optional Subjects
These are selected from the specific career pathways and tracks of choice, allowing for specialization based on your child’s interests and aptitudes.
7

The Three Senior School Career Pathways
Senior schools offer three distinct career pathways, designed to align with learners’ talents, interests, and long-term goals. Your child will need to pick only ONE PATHWAY from these options:
STEM: – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
It’s important to note that offering STEM is mandatory for senior schools.
Social Sciences: – Focuses on humanities, social studies, and related disciplines.
Creative Arts and Sports: – Also referred to as Arts and Sports Science.
Triple Pathway Schools – These institutions will provide all three options: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts & Sports. Dual Pathway Schools – These will offer STEM alongside either Social Sciences or Arts & Sports.
Module 2: The Automated Selection Process – Step-by-Step Guide
The Ministry of Education has introduced a centralized, automated system to guide learners in selecting
their pathways, subject combinations, and preferred schools. This digital system is crucial for a smooth
and transparent transition.
Accessing the Senior School Selection Portal:
The official portal link is https://selection.education.go.ke/ . Find the Portal – Begin by going to any browser and searching for “senior school selection portal,” then click the first relevant link. Log In –
On the landing page, click on the “log in” button. If you are using a mobile device, you might need
to click on the “three bars” on the far right to access the login button. Enter Credentials – You will be required to type in the Junior School NEMIS UIC (Unique Identification Code) and its password. Please be very careful and keen when entering these details. Verification – During the piloting phase, you may be prompted to fill in a Verification code, which is 54321.
Crucial Note: This is a separate platform from NEMIS, so DO NOT go to NEMIS for this selection
process.
Steps for Learner Profile Update and Pathway Selection
Once successfully logged in, the system will display all Grade 9 learners registered under KJSEA. The headteacher of the junior school plays a critical role in facilitating this process, and your active participation as a parent is strongly encouraged.
Update Learner Profiles
Typically facilitated by the School/Headteacher with Parental Input. The school official will click on each learner one at a time to update their profiles. They will indicate your child’s special need type, if any. Confirm who was present during the pathway selection. Feed the Parent or guardian Information into the system. Update Learner Location with Home County and Sub-County details. Add optional comments if necessary. Click SUBMIT and confirm the updated profile.
Selecting Your Child’s Pathway
Pick ONE from the three options. After the profile updates, click on “PATHWAY SELECTION”. You will need to pick only ONE PATHWAY for your child (e.g., STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Once selected. Confirm to proceed.
Selecting Subject Combinations
Pick THREE combinations from available options. The system will provide you with a list of Subject. Combinations available within the chosen pathway. From this list, you must select only THREE Subject Combinations that best suit your child’s strengths, interests, and aptitudes. Click SUBMIT to confirm your selection. Note: Learners with special needs have more flexible options and may choose fewer
schools that are specifically tailored to support their disabilities, including special needs or
integrated institutions.
Module 3: Choosing Senior Schools & Placement Criteria
This module delves into the crucial step of selecting senior schools and understanding the criteria that will
determine your child’s placement. Your strategic input in this phase is essential, as your child will be
selecting a total of 12 schools.
Proceeding to School Selection:
Select Schools for Each Subject Combination
You will need to click on EACH Subject Combination that you previously selected, one at a time For each combination, you will then select 4 schools, ensuring one is chosen from each of the four different clusters. Once the 4 schools are selected for a particular combination, that combination will disappear from your list, indicating its completion. Repeat this process for all three Subject Combinations, which will result in a total of 12 schools selected for your child’s consideration.
How Your Child Will Be Placed in Grade 10
Placement is a comprehensive process, meaning it is not solely based on the schools you have chosen. The Ministry of Education considers multiple factors to ensure a fair, transparent, and equitable placement :
1. Learner’s Choice – Selected pathways, tracks, subject combinations, and specific schools listed.
2. Merit – Academic performance based on KJSEA (60%) and School-Based Assessments (40%).
3. Psychometric Tests – Tests conducted by KNEC and schools to identify aptitude, interest, and talent.
4. Equity – Regional balancing to ensure fair access to educational opportunities
5 School Capacity – Availability of resources and physical space in the respective schools.
Module 4: Admission, Replacements, and Your Role
Once the selection window closes, the Ministry of Education will proceed with the crucial placement of
learners.
Admission Process:
1. Placement Results – Placement results will be released, clearly showing where your child has been placed.
2. Admission Letters – Admission letters/joining instructions will be accessible online using your child’s assessment number.
3. KEMIS System – All schools, encompassing both public and private institutions, are required to admit Grade10 learners through KEMIS.
4. Physical Reporting – It is a strict guideline that no principal shall enter a learner into KEMIS before the learner physically reports to the school.
5. Monitoring – Daily online reporting of admitted learners will be diligently monitored through KEMIS.
Replacement Process (If Needed):
In certain circumstances, if a change of school is desired, a replacement process is available, but it is
limited and subject to specific criteria:
• Schools that have vacancies will declare them through their respective county directors of education.
• Learners who wish to change schools must make their requests through the heads of junior schools at least 2 weeks before the official Grade 10 reporting date.
• Priority in replacement requests shall be given to those learners who had earlier selected the schools they are now requesting for.
• Approvals by the Ministry of Education (MoE) will be based solely on the senior schools’ documented capacity.
• Upon approval of a request, the revised joining instructions shall be accessed online; schools are explicitly instructed not to issue printed letters for replacement cases.
• It is crucial to understand that replacement will be done only once and shall be irreversible.
Your Indispensable Role as a Parent
Your involvement throughout this process is paramount for your child’s successful transition:
Active Participation
You are strongly encouraged to participate actively in the selection process to ensure smooth and appropriate placement for your child.
